The weekend that was: The Illegitimate Sons of Ben and Meet the Revs

It was the worst of times; it was pretty good times. So goes the last weekend for Revs fans, as we watched another heartbreaking loss in yet another game the team should have won. With the stunning stoppage time goal, the Revs playoff hopes seem to have been torpedoed and the ship which is the 2010 season now lists sharply and appears to be lost, but as we know from previous years this is prime time for the Revolution playoff run!

Saturday was almost too perfect, beautiful weather and not a cloud to be seen anywhere. Amongst the beauty of this late August afternoon the boys and girls of the Rebellion were gathering for another afternoon of fun, sun, and soccer. The four square action was as intense as we have seen this season and the troops were fired up for sure. With a few final tweaks to our newly created banners we were set to take the fight to Ben’s boys from Chester.

Unfortunately, the Revs once again struggled to overcome the one goal plateau and could only dish out one serving of Serbian sauce. After Serb’n up a timely goal, it was time to rally round Bobby in net for the ailing Reis and hope the local 11 could carry the day on the back of their one goal. Alas the Union persevered and was able to snag the equalizer, only to come back in extra time and bury the game winner. Further adding to our pain was the fact that they choose to celebrate right in front of our “No Doop for You” banner.

While the taste of that loss will be with us long after Saturday, Sunday was a chance to head out to the stadium for the annual Meet the Revs season ticket holder event. It’s always a refreshing time for this author when you have a chance (however brief) to get to meet and interact with some of our players. Apparently Marko was quite pleased with the chance to chat a little about Red Star Belgrade. This was followed with a reminder from Stolica that Red Star is actually “Wrong Team.” We’re still waiting to hear from Gibbs about when we can take the car out for a spin, and I got a chance to visit Preston Burpo, who is coming along nicely during his rehab, and thanked all the fans for their thoughts.

All in all Sunday was another gorgeous New England afternoon, and offered us the chance to explore and enjoy some down time at the stadium. However, the break is short lived, as we now have to prepare for Wednesday and the Superliga Finals. I had to miss out on the action back in 2008, so hopefully our boys will be able to rekindle the magic and reward us with some positive memories for 2010.

Super-Mega- Serbian Goal WIN!

Ahh the Morning After

Saturday and another beautiful day here in New England, the perfect weather for watching the local 11 take on some Texas sized trailer trash.  Before the fun in the stands even began, the Rebels’ were able to let the hair down a bit and enjoy a quite peaceful afternoon of reading and community service.  Or not!  Who had fun, I know I sure did, and thanks to all of you Rebels out there for making it a great time and showing New England how the Rebels roll.  Hell I could use a poorly made reference to the amount of fun I had, which I made up at the USMNT game but I will take the higher road and say it was a hella good time.

Just a heads up for those who could not bear witness to my flip cup skills on display in the lot ahead of times, you want me, … no you need me on the anchor leg of your teams.  Sadly despite my abilities our team could not avoid loosing.  Kinda know how SJ 21 felt cira May 2010.  I do know that there are not enough superlatives to describe the atmosphere and fun that we had there and I hope you had as well.  We can do it again, and we will.  On a final tailgate note, who knew that the bean bag toss game was called Corn Hole?  Gross … but that’s for another day.

First off though we really cannot understate how nice it was to actually have time to prepare for the return of Stevie Ralston, and make amends for the meager sendoff he got last month during Superliga.  I think we rebels can all collectively say thank you once again for all the terrific memories that we can all share and look back on.  That being said Steve, ehh you now want to associate yourself with the Dynamo have fun with that.

I will say it just this once good luck.  I am sure that there were many factors that made this the right decision for you and your family.  At least for the time being though it will be me and my Revs, while your Dynamo continue to remain on the ground floor of the Western Conference.  Perhaps the best case scenario we can all hope for is that Stevie can get some pull in Houston and perhaps filter some talent back home to Foxboro a la Kevin McHale bringing KG to Boston.

After all the fun and shenanigans in the parking lot it was time for the Rebels to kit up and hoof it into the stadium.  Despite the fact that I am still recovering from the hearing damage of the Rebellion Sound Machine, I gotta say we sounded great, and why the hell not our boys were able grab another three points.  It seems like just yesterday some Union fanboys were taunting us about our position in the tables.  Well take a look-see now folks 4th place is ours and with Chicago, KC and our friends from Philly due up next I am expecting some good things to come.

Silly in Philly… Rebel Weekend Recap

What a whirlwind weekend or so my foursquare feed tells me.  Our first ever Rebellion road trip was filled with hilarity, rowdiness, a sketchy Perovic goal and tons of Jersey traffic.  The troops left early Saturday from RI to Philly.  Hours of traffic and tons of Jersey shore jokes later, your Rebels arrived into Philadelphia… then had to drive through more traffic 20 minutes south of that to beautiful ol’ Chester, PA.  Here’s how it went down.

“Bill’s Tavern”

First off, let’s give a round of applause to the Union for somehow finding a method to show PPL Park on TV while ensuring never to show the surrounding area of complete and utter urban decay, known as Chester, PA.  Into this impoverished community we drove deeply to find a vendor that would sell us large quantities of beer.  Apparently in Quaker Pennsylvania we have to go to an actual bar to do so.  After some haphazard research, we found ourselves entering a ‘quaint’ little neighborhood bar… which we certainly don’t belong in, but hey, c’mon we need beers dude.  So, two brown bags full of loose Bud heavy cans later we were en route to PPL Park.  Please stop reading and  go to this link (Bill’s Tavern Chester, PA) and look at the Google Street view of this place. Before you even ask, yes, we went there, they couldn’t have been nicer and if you think we didn’t go to Party Pizza across the street for a $6 large cheese, you’re absolutely wrong.

“You can hate me now”

We met up with the rest of the  Revs fans already camped out in Lot A, where the Rev flag flew proudly over Forward Operating Base

Gillette four hours before kickoff.  The beer punch flowed generously to help us prepare ourselves for quite the hostile atmosphere inside.  We had a pre-game date with a Security escort who would take us into our section through the hecklers.   Not wanting to go unnoticed we screamed and yelled the whole way through the concourses directly through crowds of Union supporters, singing our songs and making a ruckus.  When we first laid eyes on the pitch, we all agreed it’s a great facility and we’d all be lying if we said we weren’t envious.  I don’t know why they have lights there though. Good luck playing at night in that neighborhood.  Onward and upward to section 133 where we had a special sign greeting us.  Posted on the adjacent Sons of Ben supporters section facing us read, “Welcome Buffalo Bills FC.”

My first comment, nice black and white print job. I remember Print Shop on Windows 3.1 too.  Well played Sons of Ben.  The stadium eventually filled to capacity, creating a hell of an atmosphere.  We had quite a few ‘friends’ in our section…  Our second gift actually came from Santa Clause, see above.  More terrible Print Shop products that read “Midnight Riders, you suck.”  Not really phased, we ripped the top part off and held up the remaining bottom section.  Epic fail Union fans.  Welcome to the league rookies.   This made it a perfect time to let everyone know that, “William Penn was a wanker, Ben Franklin was a whore, when you think of freedom, New England gave you more!”  and “Who the hell is James Buchanan!?”  Pff you call yourself a bastion of colonial pride and your state has yielded one president….and it was James Buchanan. That’s weak.  What’s cool is that I can’t think of any other clubs that can riff on each other based on their actions in the late 1700’s.  Pretty legit, I say The Colonial Cup becomes the official Union vs Revs rivalry match. I do feel bad for the people that heckled us in our section, they had to turn around to yell at us, they missed a pretty good game.  Clowns.

The Story So Far: Revs Mid-Season Recap

Folks, welcome to the first edition of the Extra Time Blog, the official blog of the Rebellion, covering all things soccer with a heavy focus on our Boys in Blue and MLS.  It’s been a while since we last met via interwebs, and with the World Cup over and MLS All-Star break around the corner it’s about time we recap the season so far.

That’s my nice way of putting it, in reality your memory may be a little fuzzy, (perhaps from funneling beverages from a Vuvuzela) so let me tell you what you’ve missed.

Revs @ Galaxy
“Edson who?”

We started off the season with a tight loss in LA.  1-0.  We were angry, partly because the promised food at Our House was late to arrive…but neither team really asserted themselves for an extended period of time and it would have been great to steal a victory in the Away leg against the Galaxy.   Revs lose 1-0.   Revs @ Galaxy Highlights

Revs @ United
“In a Mansally minute…anything can change!”

Following week we packed a few different locations for viewing parties to watch the Revs travel down to DC, and it took only a total of two minutes of Kenny Mansally to give us 3 points.   He knocked home two beauts, first in the 80′ off a Chris Tierney cross and in the 82′ a great individual effort that let to a gorgeous finesse shot curling to the back post, so pretty that it made Revs TV announcer Brad Feldman sound like he was birthing kittens. 2 nil to the Boys in Blue, great win, leaving the Screaming Eagles silent.  Revs win 2-0. TFC @ Revs
“Hometown Throwdown”

Fort was packed.  Three sections of chaos.  Oh the “pre Capo stand” era of 2010.  Great game.  Tons of traveling TFC fans made the trek to the opposite end line.  They were quite loud and Canadian.  They got even louder when they scored midway thru the 1st half of a DeRo header to make it 1-0 Canuckleheads.  It appears that Steve Nicol then went to a pharmacy to find a remedy to quiet them down.  The prescription?  Make rookie striker #15  Zack Schilawski pop his MLS cherry and score his first goal, then repeat that every five minutes until he has his first hat-trick.  We ran out of streamers.  Three Schilawski goals in ten minutes time.  Nyassi added another in ‘66 when he capitalized on a a terrible pass back from the TFC defense to end it.  Revs dominate and win 4-1.   Revs vs TFC Highlights
