Turner Tifo!
For those that dont know, Tifos are fully covered by the Supporter Groups. Membership costs go directly into things like this. This tifo is one of our favorite we have done in some time. Wanting to send off Turner to the World Cup in fashion was a goal and its one we scored! In the end, this tifo was really meant to be two things at once; a message to Mauricio Pochettino, but also a tribute to Matt and everything he means to Revs supporters.
When we first started throwing ideas around, a lot of the concepts were based around phrases like “Guard the Nation.” That idea felt fitting for Matt because of the way a goalkeeper protects and leads from the back, but also because a lot of us still see him as someone who should be representing the USMNT regularly.
From there, the idea naturally evolved into portraying him in Revolutionary War style attire. It tied together both the New England Revolution identity and the idea of Matt standing as a defender of club and country.
The American flag in the background was included to reinforce the USMNT side of the message, while the pine trees were meant to tie it back to New England, The Fort, and supporter culture here. At front and center is, “Poch, Take Note” a direct statement. As revs supporters, we haven’t forgotten what Matt brings and we still believe he’s America’s number one.
“There’s Only One Matt Turner”, which is self explanatory, as an ode to what we sing from the fort as a tribute to one of the most important players to come through this club in recent years.
It’s not every day that Sports Illistrated, National News, MLS Recap, etc. notice your Tifo. Honestly, it’s always a humbling experience when even a player notices and appreciates something like this. You’re talking about someone who’s played at the national team level and on the world stage, so for him to see something that our group put so much time, effort, and emotion into and for it to make him feel appreciated; that’s really all we can ask for as supporters. We shared a lot of amazing moments with Matt over the years, from the Supporters’ Shield run to everything he gave this club and this fanbase.
As a whole, Revs supporters are just proud and grateful to have watched his journey firsthand; from an overlooked keeper fighting for a spot to someone representing his country at the highest level.
We can’t wait to see him continue to represent the U.S. on the world stage and hopefully in another World Cup.
